Vignette #1: The Cure for the Common Faker
Cadence loves medicine. She sneaks cough drops, she fakes fevers, and pays very close attention to who gets medicine for what ailment. A while ago she found that all she had to do was throw up in church to be rewarded with some yummy tums, or "The medicine that crunches". Since then she's been faking tummy aches quite often. I've been worried for some time about this medicine fetish, and I'm always worried that I'm reading her wrong--maybe she really DOES have symptoms and I'm not taking care of them? If I start being sneaky about medicine whenever somebody else gets it, will she start to be sneaky, too? How long until she starts trying to climb up to the medicine cabinet?
The next night it was the same story. Exactly.
And then tonight she said to me, "Mom, I have a tummy ache..." (Which I believe she may have actually had this time), and then thinking it over she slowly said, "but, actually I don't need any medicine!"
Problem solved.
Vignette #2: Cadence's Dilemma
Cadence knows that there is a strictly enforced rule that she is not to get out of bed once she is down for the night. This has been a real problem for us, so we've tried every way possible to keep her to stay in bed. She loses bed-time privileges--"blanky with balls", the closet light, the door gets closed...
Tonight after she had been down for at least 30 minutes, she came into the room where I was feeding Layla.
"Mom," she said, "A cup fell out of my bed."
"Well, can you just pick it up yourself?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because I can't get out of my bed."
Hmmm.... she finally grasps the rule of no getting out of bed. I guess things around here aren't as white/black as Spencer and I expect them to be.
I can't look at this picture without the song, "Richest Man On Earth" popping into my head and remembering when my dad told me he was that, because of his family. I believed him, by the way (that he was actually that rich. He was not :) ).
Anyway, this daddy loves his girls.

You are amazing!
I just told my kids that if they took medicine when they didn't REALLY need it, it would kill them. Scared 'em straight. (Okay, I'm not quite THAT mean, I explained it a little gentler than that) I also usually start by giving them a chewable vitamin C. If they still complain after that, I know they aren't faking it.
Lemon juice is a great idea. Unfortunately, my kids LOVE lemon juice. Weirdos.
When you cure the common won'tstayinbed disease, give me a call.
Also, can I just reiterate how blasted cute you are? I know I say it all the time, but I enjoy our little online interaction so much!
I am DEFINITELY keeping this trick in my brain for future reference. Genius!
Hi Mardee! Benn just told me the good news that you guys are headed our way! We are super excited!
Just in case you are feeling a bit nervous about moving to Arkansas I just want to reiterate how much we love it here. I remember when we came out to find a place to live, we went out to eat and saw a bunch of women doing bridal or baby shower - laughing and eating together and I told Benn how much I wanted to make some good girlfriends in Arkansas. Well, there are so many amazing girls here and I have made some of the best friends of my life. I think you guys will really be happy here. Call me if you need anything or have any questions: 479-283-0815

Oh yeah, and my email address is michelle.s.manning@gmail.com if you want to email rather than call - you know when you're up in the middle of the night feeding... :)
What a cute, brilliant little girl you have on your hands. She is so amusing, I can't even handle it.
Great thinking on your part! I hope that I can become a mommy genius/trickster like you someday. I still feel like a pushover that doesn't know how to deal sometimes...
So happy to have finally met that little Layla.
You are hilarious. We miss you! Loved the Christmas card. I'm becoming a follower of your "awesomeness" blog. Feel free to peek at ours (I know, I haven't updated in FOREVER, I'm between the third and forth stages of blogging.) And since you are so close, will we ever get to see you before you move? (as if you might just be coming our way for no reason--we need to go to Chicago sometime...)
