My friend, Nor, has asked all her loyal blog readers to contribute a Beyonce-inspired piece of performance art for her birthday this year. Last year we threw her a surprise party but she didn't think that was good enough :) ...The winner of the contest (did I mention it was a contest?) gets Betsey Johnson (Nor's favorite Designer) earrings! Oh, please! Let us win. If the kids aren't good enough dancers for you, we threw in a few shots of our husbands looking...eh, hot. Here you go, Nor!
This is the Beyonce video that started all this.
The kids (okay, and adults) loved watching the video on our (admittedly large) tv and trying to copy all the moves. We did it over, and over, and over again. For days and days in anticipation of the filming. The kids begged to dance to it several times a day. And this is what we came up with:
Since I can't imagine that these hilarious kids won't win this for me, I'll just give my acceptance speech now:
I would like to thank Robyn, for not only allowing her young boys to watch this crazy dance video over and over again in prep, but for bringing them just at bed-time to make this work. Oh, and by the way, she did the filming and editing! Thanks, Robyn! You're the best.
I would like to thank Cadence, Jacob, and Nicholas, for being hard-core dancers. Honestly, I'm really impressed with their ability to copy some of these moves. If you've seen the video as many times as I have, you'll recognize every attempt. Even little Nicholas (18 months) had some good booty-smacks and hip-shakes. You'll notice Jacob's excellent version of the "floor punch", and just watch his face as he watches the video and dances. He's so thoughtful and discerning. And Cadence has those hips down. Also, notice that just before the lyrics say something about drinking a cup, she does the move of holding a cup to her lips. Oh, these kids are so hilarious.
And finally, Thanks to Nor. This activity gave us hours of family entertainment. I can't tell you how much fun we all had dancing together, trying to do these ridiculous moves. It was a great idea and an excuse to get crazy.
And while we're on the topic of Nor, I'll just say a few things. Nor is so on top of things and confident that it's hard for me to compliment her. My little immature innervoice says, "She must know how practically perfect she is, like she needs to hear you say it!" Nor is highly educated, widely cultured, one of the most well-read people I know, and carries herself like a superstar. She knows celebrities, by the way. She has had every car (including a 67 Mustang!) and been everywhere. Oh, and her blog is way better than mine. But, like me, her husband is handsome and a genuinely charming, good guy. Like me, she is the mother of two of the cutest kids ever, and in spite of how much she sounds like a "woman of the world", she wants to have a whole brood--just like me! Family is most important to this woman who seems to have everything. So, why would she need my little country-bumpkin compliments? Tonight it's not about whether or not you need my compliments, Nor. I would just like to tell you that I think you are great. I've loved being your friend, because you are so interesting! Whether it is how much you know about Shakespeare or cars, or what kind of crazy thing you did when you were mad the other day....You are a great example of a person who puts family first and I love that you want to have so many kids, in spite of how much you love to wear bikinis! (Not saying you won't still look tip-top after 10 babies:) ). Anyway, thanks again for this fun activity you assigned us. I hope your birthday is the best ever.

this is hilarious and I think a new fad has emerged. I miss Cadence and her amazing dance skillz. I have been reading your posts and they are pretty entertaining. It takes a lot to get the attention of my jaded mind. See ya soon.
wow. i think joe and spencer have some of the same dance moves...but joe has never seen the video :) so cute mard!!
wow i think i was most impressed with how synchronized matt and spencer were they really are pretty good dancers and cadence's booty shake was definaitely the best i have ever seen!! I think this music video is better than the original!!
I forgot to include my challenge to all of MY blog readers: you do it now! And then let me know when it's on your blog--I'm telling you it was a ton of fun. So if you like me at all, do it, then post it, or at least email it to me!
Mardee that has to be the funniest thing I have EVER seen. i was laughing the whole way through. Your cadence is hilarious, and yeah she has the moves down pat, its awesome! I think its cool that you got the husbands in there to dance, way to go Spencer! I have always admired the fun things you do to spice up your life. Keep doing that, its awesome, I need a little more of that in my life sometimes. (and I love that song-if you like it- I showed it to Ty the other day and he said you like this song? and I said, yes it has an awesome beat and I just LOVE it!) so, rock on Mardee!
That made me laugh tears. The fashion might be my favorite thing...particulary Cadence and Jacob...I'm still trying to figure out the unbuttoned onsie look. Wow...Spencer and Matt...wow.
DYING DYING DYING!! Can't eveh type laughing so hard! There are so many things I love about htis video-- the floor punches by Jacob, love the cuts to the big boys (who are actually pretty good, and great sports!) love Cadence cup drink thing, love the walk around in the circle, love the booty smacking.
But MOST of all, I love the onsies as leotards, with one arm tucked in. That was a piece of sheer genius.
You are the front runner (as you are the first), my friend. That was simply fantastic.
And the post? Holy moly, thank you! You're so kind and I'm glad we're friends. You are no bumpkin, you've been more places than I have and you're all hardcore living in a hard city and toting those little kids everywhere! And aren't YOU Miss Sociology? When I met you and your little family I totally thought hey! We're kindred spirits! My all time favorite Clivaceous moment was the unicorn halloween costumes. I miss you terribly and can't wait for you to come visit some day. Thanks for participating, I knew you were good for it and would come up with something difficult to beat. Love you, sorry for the rambling comment, but I'm beside myself with happiness over this the greatest birthday present ever!
As the mother of those little boys and the wife of the big boy I must say I am grateful to Nor for this project. It was an absolute blast. And, so what if they are obsessed with leggy women in leotards now? Well worth it! Thanks again Mardee and Nor.
And LuAnn, the unbuttoned onesie is due to me bringing the only solid color onesie I had for Nico only to find that he's grown so much that it was literally bursting off of him.
I thought that was the cutest video, Cadence is an awesome dancer. It was even funnier after I watched some of the Beyonce video, then I understood the no pants look and the one-sleeve outfit. Thanks for sharing!
Slashed tires. Get it? Awesome video. Now I don't want to film ours.
Those two men are the funniest thing I have EVER seen and now I'm going to try to force my hubby to participate. He's not as cool as those 2 men so he won't.
oh this is so so great. made my day. I totally want to make a music video to beyonce now too. really this looks so fun. I think i need an excuse to just be crazy too.

Dear Clives:
I would like to state, for the record, that I still heart Cadence and her sweet moves.
I kept waiting for the little boys to say "we are the dancerssssss" ala Justin Timberlake in his rendition, but I think your three beat them hands down.
Came to you through Nor's blog. OMGosh...your kids are the most precious things. That little girl in the "one shoulder onsie" is the cutest thing ever. And you hubbies are darn cute, too. Bravo.
Genius moves and pure entertainment!
And your husbands deserve awards.
There are no words :) I LOVE you! Can't wait to see you this weekend :) You're the coolest mom. Ever. What lucky girls you have! Teach me your ways..
I can't believe I didn't comment on it when we watched as a family the other night! This is brillant! You husband kind of scares me now though. Cadence is adorable and so is that little boy! Awesome!
We need to be friends. This is definitely something I would have Rachel do (if only she were big enough!). Loved it!
I am dying!!! Where was I and why wasn't I invited to the party? That is so rock'n! Are you ready for another GSBW night? I'll host.
That was fun. I am now convinced that every little girl needs to know that song and learn the dance moves. Check out this video my sister-in-law found.
