Naming a child is not as much fun as little girls dream it is. At least for Spencer and I. We've largely avoided it this pregnancy, and we've hardly made any progress. Now that we've only got a month left, we're getting more serious about it. We think we've decided on one, but we're ready to open up the game to the masses.
Here's how it's going to work: I'll tell you the handful we're already considering. Then I'll give you my guidelines, and then you may vote and/or suggest as many as you like. Remember, it's a girl (so they say).
Names currently up for consideration (in alphabetical order, not necessarily in the order of importance):
Campbell
Corinne
Darcy
Esme
We will probably use Jeanette as the middle name with whatever name we go with (unless it obviously doesn't go). (Jeannette is my Mother's middle name).
Now for my guidelines:
1. No top ten names. Emily, Hannah, Olivia, Ava, are all examples of cute names that are in the top ten for 2007 according to the social security website.
2. Preferably no J names.
3. Single-syllable names don't sound as good with Clive (i.e. Blythe Clive).
4. The simplest/most standard spelling should be used (not that I don't like my own name).
5. Spencer is resistent to any name that is "too pansy". I've tried to tell him that we have girls, so get over it, but he can't. I like "pansy names". For example, Violet is too pansy for him. I think of a little girl in a dress and picture calling her the name in question. Spencer pictures the name on a resume. NERD.
6. Easily shortened, as I'm really prone to doing so. i.e., i love the name Scarlet, but knew I would call her "scar", which isn't as fitting for a little girl as it is for an evil lion-uncle.
Okay-- let the naming begin!
Also, I love this picture because it is SO Spencer. If you don't see it, you should see his pictures of when he was a little boy. Spittin' image. (minus the pink).

Nice Pic...
Just wanted to echo Mardee's plea for feedback. We can't guarantee we'll accept your naming suggestions, but we appreciate them. Speak now or forever hold your peace.
(from Clifford)
How about the names Shamiqua, Taylor, or Ashley?
But if Spencer's not into pansy names, maybe you should try the name Rambo.
As for single-syllable names not going well with Clive, would those include names like Reese, Cliff, and John? Just wondering.
Seriously, though, we'll see what we can come up with.
Oh, this is a fun game :) I honestly love all four names you've chose. My two favorite from that list are probably.. Esme and Corinne? Tyler and I are going to have a very difficult time naming our children, as he seems to hate most of the names I love (or he's dated a girl with that name.. ).
My favorite we won't be using is Hollyn. That sounds cute with Jeannette AND Clive! It's definitely not too pansy.. Elisabeth is also an excellent choice :) I hope I win!
PS I'm soooooo sad we didn't get to see each other while you were out here. Sigh.
Spencer, you are such a nerd! (love you!) My litmus test is the "Oh, Winifred" (or whatever name) test. If you can picture the name being said romantically without cracking up, that's a good sign. Also, you must consider whether the name is a "beat-me-up" name.
I like all of the names you listed, but be aware that there will be soup-related teasing with Campbell.
Girl names I never got to use because we only make boys:
Chloe
Zoe
Isabelle
Holly
Ruby
Fran (just kidding)
I love names found in nature (flowers, gemstones), but they probably wouldn't pass Spencer's test. Also love Shakespeare names.
Megan says she likes Corinne. Corinne is pretty. Esme is nice, but it may not have come around yet (which could be a good thing) Names in the top 20 are annoying. I like Willa, Serena, Blaire, Daphne,Violet, Tessa, Katherine,Hazel. In the end you just have to do what YOU like, you know?
I like Darcy, but I'm sure whatever you guys pick will match the personality of your cute little girl perfectly.
Maybe you can help us once we find out the gender of our upcoming arrival.
I totally agree about not using the most popular names list, there were always about 3 Amys in my classes.
All of your ideas. My only suggestion is Daphne. I have a friend with a little girl named Daphne and I think it's really cute!
Darcy is a boys name, Campbell is a last name. Corrine is nothing special, when paired with cadence. I love Esme. My fam always has to tone down my weird names. Miranda's runners up were vivian, magnolia and Cassandra, which would be great with cadence.
it was fun to read your post and all the comments - I personally LOVE alliteration in names so I'm crazy for Campbell Clive or Corrine. What about Corrie? (just like Corrine but without the N) I knew a woman named Corrie in college - she was beautiful, smart, dignified, sweet, and well-respected. (She's the only Corrie I've ever known.) I like the idea of a non-too-common name and relatively spelling-intuitive, so I think you guys have the right philosophy and you can't go wrong.
Ok, one more comment because I think you are someone who likes information.
I LOVE campbell, as I've previously said.. however, this website:
http://babyfit.sparkpeople.com/baby-names-search-results.asp?advstartswith=C&searchtype=advanced&how=letter
thinks Campbell is a boy.
That might throw somebody off when your beautiful, sophisticated smart daughter comes in for her job interview and they were expecting a young man. It might take them a bit to adjust thier thinking and they might miss the first key moments of her imressive interview. (I'm thinking about the resume thing for Spencer.) She'll wow them, so it won't matter anyway. But there you go.
FWIW, I don't agree with the website, but it's just another data point. Now I sounds like a nerd! :)
I like Campbell, but agree it might be thought of as a boy name.
Corinne is pretty and makes me think of Corinne Bailey Rae who is popular now.
I have never heard Esme before. Is it pronounced "S-mee"?
I think Darcy sounds best with Jeanette.
Also, something to consider-- if you name Baby #2 a C name, will you feel like you need to continue that trend, if there is a baby #3?
I thought of a name I love... Piper...What do you think? I think it is really cute!
I think I like Esme, that is really pretty and seems like you guys.
Yeah, we're going to need an update on all of our suggestions, speaking for the rest of your commentors. How'd we do? Feel free to shoot any and all of my opinions down.
that is a really cute picture of cadence! oh i miss her...
and you, i miss you too...
