Finding a Photographer

An attempt at our own family pictures from a year and a half ago.

I've only done professional pictures of Cadence once, and we went to JC Penney's. After that, I swore I would never pay somebody to steal her soul again. I just felt like I paid them almost 100 bucks to put her on a white sheet and make her look personality-less, which seems impossible. So, I've put it off. But I really should get some pics done of her, and soon. Also, we've never had a family picture professionally taken and I think we should before we have another.
So my question is this: does anybody have recommendations of creative/interesting photographers that wouldn't cost us a billion dollars? I don't know what I'm willing to spend (ok, I'm willing to spend anything, but I'm not sure what I could convince my husband to agree to). I just don't want to come away with a pic that seems like I should have only paid 20 bucks for and shouldn't have spent two weeks preparing for, you know what I mean?

The Bay Area would be best, of course, but we could also do it in Tacoma/Seattle area, or the LA area, depending if there are openings at the times we'll be there.

Thanks!

I'm having the same dilemma! Ava's birthday is coming up next month and I really want to get some pics taken of her. Sorry I couldn't be of any help. But I can't wait to see if anyone else has any ideas :)

I'm in love with my 6 week pro pictures of Mimi. Go to www.dawnraephotography.com and tell her Celia (my sister) or I sent you. She lives in Bwood and I think she's reasonably priced (mine was a gift). I'm going to do it again when baby 2 comes.
And DO call me and we can plan to hang out with our babies. Maybe the jungle on Wed? Or next Monday afternoon?

I don't know any fancy places, especially in CA. But TARGET was fun with McKinley. They devote all their attention to you with a no rush attitude. The photographer was down on the ground and having fun with most of McKinley's pictures. They even went along with my crazy ideas (the red flyer trycicle we brought from home). The photographer had him hugging the bear we brought as a prop, pretending to sleep, and all sorts of fun photos. So many cute photos, not enough money to buy them in all the shades of color, black and white, and sepia.
Another added bonus is the chance to look at ALL the photos online. I downloaded the copy and put them on the blog for everyone to see. That way you don't have to buy them ALL but you get to enjoy them ALL.

Next time you come out to Utah you should have our neighbor take some. He mostly takes outside shots but you saw what he did with Nelson just in his guest bedroom. He also just gives you a cd of all the pictures so you can print out all the pictures you want. He took Nelson's Christmas pictures and the last ones I posted. He is taking Mary's wedding pictures this weekend.
